These folkloric recordings of the Gnawa musicians of Morocco were made by Tucker Martine in 1994. The Gnawa, mix Arabic, Berber and black African rhythms, as well as Islamic and tribal religious traditions. Although recorded in the field, these tracks have a bright sonic clarity that matches the amazing energy of the performances.
Martine's quest led him to Gnawa, a mystical brotherhood whose ancestors migrated from West Africa to North Africa approximately 500 years ago as slaves of French colonists. After mixing with the local Arabic and Berber societies, a unique cultural blend resulted which is reflected in the Gnawan music.
The resulting CD, 'Eat the Dream: Moroccan Reveries' is the result of Martine's wanderings through the streets of Marrakech, Tangier, and Essaouira. The rich aural ambience of the country is captured here and serves as a backdrop to the stunning musical treasures he uncovered.
